Plants vs. Animals

Plants

There are 2 major groups of plant:
  1. Plants with flowers
  2. Plants without flowers
Flower plants have 4 main parts, each parts of the plants have specific function.
  • flowers
  • stems
  • leaves
  • roots

Non-flower plants are some of the eldest plants on earth. Some famous non flowering plants are ferns and horsetails. You can often see horsetails growing as weeds in gardens and fields. Fossils of these ferns and horsetails can often be seen in pieces of coal. Non flowering plants have survived for so long because they have been able to adapt to all the changes that have taken place on earth.

**Non flowering plants are usually simpler than flowering plants. But because they do not have flowers, they have to reproduce in other ways. Non flowering plants grow from spores and not seeds.

Animals

Animals can divided into 2 main group:

  1. Vertebrates
  2. Invertebrates
There are 5 main classes of vertebrates:

Birds
  • Mammals
  • Birds
  • Fishes
  • Reptiles
  • Amphibians

Fishes

Mammals
Dogs, cats, horses, duckbill platypuses, kangaroos, dolphins and whales are all mammals. What do all these animals have in common? All of these animals drink milk when they are a baby and have hair on their body.

Birds
All birds have feathers and are born out of hard-shelled eggs. The feathers on a bird?s wings and tail overlap. Because they overlap, the feathers catch and hold the air. This helps the bird to fly, steer itself, and land.

Fishes
Fish are vertebrates (animals with a backbone) that live in water and have gills, scales and fins on their body.

Reptiles
Reptiles are a class of animal with scaly skin. They are cold blooded and are born on land.

Amphibians
Amphibians are born in the water. When they are born, they breath with gills like a fish. But when they grow up, they develop lungs and can live on land.

Invertebrates
Over 95 percent of all animals are invertebrates. They are characterized by a structure they all lack: A backbone or vertebal column.
